SPD: Education

Education of all citizens, but particularly young people with disabilities, is of utmost importance. Through education their potential is unlocked, chances of competition in the labour market increased and above all: personal and economical independence enhanced.

  • SPD Gauteng North strives to ensure optimal education for all people with disabilities
  • An approach of mainstream education is supported but as a developing country the road of special schools for learners with special needs is traveled
  • Since 1959 the organization has been actively involved in the founding of schools for learners with disabilities.

*Pretoria School for cerebral palsied learners in Prinshof

*New Hope School  for learners with learning and physical disabilities  in Ashley Gardens

*Alma School for learners with mental and physical disabilities in  Eloffsdal

*Filadelfia School for learners with physical disabilities in Soshanguve

*Unica School for learners with autism in Ashley Gardens

  • No less than 1539 learners were taught at these schools during 2007 with outstanding achievements in academic, sport and cultural fields.
  • The relationship between our organization and the schools has always been healthy, with regular contact. Presently three educators from these schools serve on the organizations Governance Board, one being the chairperson.
  • SPD strives to sponsor the schools financially or in goods as far as possible. During 2007 no less than 250 wheelchairs had been distributed to the schools with financial aid for certain educational projects. Funding from overseas had also been facilitated to two schools whilst attendance of conferences and workshops had been financed.

Any sponsorship to the education of learners with special needs is seen and valued as an investment!
